The Amazing Wildlife of Rotonda West This pileated woodpecker made a guest appearance in my backyard Saturday morning. Pileated woodpeckers are absolutely amazing to watch! Their brains actually float inside their heads to insulate their brains from the effects of their fierce pecking. This is the woodpecker that inspired the creation of "Woody Woodpecker". One of these photos in the link below show the chips of wood flying as this mighty woodpecker strips away layers of bark and wood to uncover insects. The photos show the impact to the tree. But since the limb was infested with insects, the pecking benefitted the tree by accelerating the process of severing the infested limb from the rest of the tree. I was able to get within 15 feet of of the woodpecker by approaching him at a turtle's pace. These close ups show something I rarely see in wild birds - facial expressions. The look of surprise occurred when a mockingbird swooped by squawking. -Brett Slattery |
